2015 Winner
Best house additions / alterations / renovations
The brief was to relocate the kitchen from the front of the house to the back, which entailed pushing the rear wall out 3 metres creating an additional 27SM of interior space. The kitchen runs the entire width of the house and incorporates a laundry including sink and appliances.
The main design feature of the kitchen is the wall-to-wall louvred windows looking out to the pool area. The frames for these were constructed off -site in sections and required large uprights to support the floor above. It was necessary to lift all the under supporting ceiling beams in order to maintain one plane throughout the kitchen/dining/living area.
The long expanse of windows determined the placement of the fridge and choice of below bench pantry drawers so as not to interfere with sight lines. The kitchen joinery was made off site by Solid Kitchens & Cabinets and includes an integrated fridge and dishwasher, motorised waste/recycling drawer, soft close drawers and internal compartments by Blum. All cabinetry is finished with semi gloss black 2pac. The use of the same quartz stone material for both the bench tops and splash back creates a seamless effect. The lack of overhead cabinets was the driving factor in the design of the recessed shelving niche for glass storage.
Other features include in-ceiling speakers and wine rack/display shelving at the back of the fridge, linking to the living/dining area. The floor is a polymer concrete floor topping which has been used throughout the house.
